Guwahati, Assam: Tragedy struck the city of Guwahati as a water supply pipe belonging to the municipal body burst, resulting in the loss of one life and causing extensive damage to over 40 houses in the Kharguli area. The incident occurred on Thursday around 3 PM when a pipe in the Gammon JICA water supply main line ruptured, releasing an enormous volume of water that flooded homes and swept away several vehicles.
Sumitra Rabha, a resident of one of the affected houses, tragically lost her life due to the sudden surge of water. Meanwhile, approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to local hospitals for medical attention. The incident impacted around 600 people residing in the vicinity. The police have cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation into the cause of the pipe rupture.
The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) assured the public that water supply would be restored promptly. However, the affected residents expressed their anger and dissatisfaction, demanding compensation from the GMDA for the damages caused to their properties.
This unfortunate event has once again highlighted the subpar state of infrastructure in Guwahati. However, the city of Guwahati continues to face challenges due to its inadequate infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and other essential facilities.
